Moving People Summit Postponed due to Federal election PDF Print E-mail

CILTA has confirmed that the Moving People Summit that was originally planned for 19-20 August 2010, will be postponed due to the Federal election in August 2010. The Summit will now be next year 17-18 March 2011.

At this stage no major Political Party has released its Passenger Transport policy and we are concerned that if a Summit were to be held August 2010 month the outcomes might be lost in the post election processes.  This postponement will mean that the Summit outcomes will be more valuable and will have a greater influence on government strategies.

We apologize for this inconvenience and look forward to your participation in March 2011.

Background to the Summit:

In March 2010 the Australasian Railways Association (ARA), Bus Industry Confederation (BIC) and UITP jointly released their industry strategy “Moving People -  Solutions for a growing Australia”.  Adjunct Professor John Stanley, of the University of Sydney and Paul Blake, Transport Strategy adviser to BIC have, in recent months, completed a series of workshops throughout Australia presenting the strategy to industry groups and key transport policy makers.

CILTA believes that this strategy is a significant strategic blueprint for passenger transport in Australia and as such will be hosting our own “Moving People Summit” in Brisbane on the 17th and 18th of March to continue the momentum for a better passenger transport system. The Summit is an invitation only event for Senior Government policy makers, Industry leaders, transport academics and community leaders with an interest in sustainable transport.

The Summit will provide a constructive forum to:-
•    Review how the passenger and public transport task is performing in Australia
•    Examine important best practice initiatives across Australia and consider how they can be adopted more widely
•    Review National strategies and directions and provide advice and feedback to key decision makers

Workshops will also be conducted to examine:-
•    How to influence the transport culture in Australia towards a more sustainable model
•    Funding issues and strategies for the future
•    The opportunity to create partnerships for sustainable transport

The Summit is intended to be a working event where participants interact, share ideas and develop strategies and actions for the future.  We are seeking to create an opportunity for working together at the national level.  You can expect to be challenged and to have the opportunity to work with Australia’s motivated sustainable and public transport professionals.

It is expected that the Summit will produce a “Call for Action” which will support the ARA/BIC/UITP strategy and suggest practical and implementable initiatives.
